Zildjian Cymbals
Recognized as the oldest family-owned business in the United States, Zildjian has been in the cymbal business since 1623. Avedis Zildjian, an Armenian alchemist in the city of Constantinople, discovered a secret alloy to create cymbals with spectacular clarity and power in 1618, while trying to find a base metal combination for gold. The blend of copper, tin and traces of silver rang with an extraordinary sound that caught the attention of the Sultan. Avedis was invited to live at court, in Topkapi Palace, to make cymbals for the Sultan’s elite Janissary Bands. The Sultan granted Avedis permission to leave the palace and pursue his own business ventures in 1623.
Four centuries and fifteen generations later, Zildjian continues to thrive as the ultimate cymbal manufacturer. It has been at the forefront of cymbal innovations, as Avedis III was the first to develop drum set cymbals, and name them, ride, crash, splash and hi-hat. Armand Zildjian, Avedis III’s son, developed close relationships with top drummers of his time by hand-selecting cymbals for them. Today, Zildjian is run by Armand’s daughters, Craigie and Debbie in Norwell, MA.
